Last week was a rather interesting week given a number of upsets. Maybe next time I'll include some comments with some of my choices, but since I'm a bit under the weather and sleep, I'll just post my picks and hope for the best. Here they are.

I've recently joined an NFL pool a friend of mine was in, and since they incorporate using the whole spread system in determining their picks. Since that's how they made their choices, I'll try to be consistent and do the same with how I make mine as well.

Last Saturday we drove down to Sesame Place near Philly.

It was a wonderful time even though it rained through some parts of the day. Elise had a wonderful time playing in the kiddie wading pool area with Franny.

After sometime, a Libran will again be his energetic self and be out of the door even before you can say bye. However, it does not mean that he has a dual nature. It's just that he needs the lazy spell to regain his lost energy. As far as his emotions are concerned, he may become too sentimental one moment, turn sarcastic the other moment and become extremely cheerful in the very next. Again, it's not their dual personality, but a Libran's constant need to experience different emotion at different points of time.

Infact, his personality is a mix of kindheartedness, softness, equality, indecisiveness, theoretical logic and inability to take orders. He also loves to argument, especially when someone passes general statements. A Libran can take both the sides of an argument by turns, and win at both. However, behind all this argumentativeness is the constant urge to be fair and impartial, to look at both the sides of the coin, making him seem indecisive.

However, don't get impatient when a Libran is making up his mind. He hates impatience and it can make him extremely stubborn. He is very honest and does not like showing off. One year at OMB

Today, officially marks my one year working for NYC OMB. I must say that it's been a great year. I've learned a lot from my work and it's been great being surrounded by very helpful and friendly co-workers.

Here are a few facts I've learned...

1. New York City has more debt except for the state of California.

2. New York Sanitation workers are called New York's Strongest.

3. NYC is the largest city in terms of population size, with more than 5 million next to the second largest city.

and much more. I would certainly recommend checking it out as a place for work.

Good people in NYC...

I've often read or heard of stories of good citizens either on the paper and in the news. How they they find something left behind and instead of taking advantage of another person's loss, do the right thing and find a way to return the item to its rightful owner.

This time Franny was the recepient of such kindness. Earlier that day, Franny was busy preparing for the lunch that she prepared since Fr. Nebres was in town. On the way home, given that it was raining and that she had to carry Lissy back to the apartment from the garage without an umbrella, it was at that time that she dropped her wallet.

She had no idea that she had lost it if not for call received later in the day from American Express informing her of the lost wallet. Greg, the person who found it, called American Express and reported the loss. He then left a number to reach him, Franny having to watch over Lissy, asked me to get in touch with Greg. I then got to meet up with him later in the afternoon and got the wallet back.

Again Franny and I would like to thank Greg for what he did. It saved us a lot of trouble and we appreciate his kindness. I even bought him a cheesecake, but he declined the cake and told me that I should just bring it home for Franny and Lissy.

A million thanks to Greg, and for those who ever pick up a wallet and there is nothing there to indicate how to contact the person, just call the credit card company for sure they will be able to get in touch with the owner.

Preamble:
We, the wives of America, love being married to the husbands of America. We know we have our faults, but with our ever-morphing roles these days, there's a lot of pressure on us to be superhuman. We care for our families, manage the home, keep ourselves attractive, and even bring home our shares of the bacon. We know we sometimes lash out, but we really do want to "live happily ever after" with you. Our mutual acknowledgement of these amendments can go a long way toward achieving that.

Amendment I
We have the right to dislike your buddies.
We know it's important for you to have your guy friends, but you should know by now that we're not turned on by your stories of the good old days at college, your sexual exploits, or which relief pitcher the Red Sox should trade. Disappear for a while and be boys—it's OK, go chug beer and high-five—but please don't expect us to be happy when your friends come over and put their feet on our coffee tables or leave their beer cans on the floor.

Amendment II
We have the right to experience PMS in all its glory.
Either give us our space or accept the consequences. We know it's unfair, but some of us just can't rein it in. You knew that before you married us. We may shout, cry, belittle, act irrationally. It lasts a few days each month, so please deal with it. Or even better: Bring home dinner, clear the dishes, and give us a big hug.

Amendment III
We have the right to demand you finish a household job.
We're not your mothers, and we loathe having to act like them. If you wash the dishes, do them all and clean the sink, too. Don't just bag the trash, take it outside to the bin. If you start a load of laundry, put it in the dryer and fold it too. We don't like nagging any more than you like hearing it.

Amendment IV
We have the right to an honest answer to "What's wrong?"
We admit guilt in this area too, but "Nothing" says nothing. If we ask, it's not because we're trying to make casual conversation. It's because we love you and need an honest answer. If there truly is nothing wrong, then ask why we think otherwise. Yes, this could open a can of worms, but remember when we dated and talked about everything?

Amendment V
We have the right to keep our secrets.
Not marriage-ending ones, just small secrets we choose to hide from others. If we don't want to speak our age or share our true hair color or reveal the cheesy TV shows we watch in private, it's not your place to reveal them to our friends, your business partners, or your ex-girlfriends/wives. We're not asking you to lie for us, but we would appreciate your discretion.

Amendment VI
We have the right to clean air.
You may think it's funny, masculine, or natural to pass gas anywhere and anytime you please, but when the smell drives us to gag, it's uncool. There is something inherently wrong in the relationship if you must walk over to us and fart, or if you intentionally set a bad example for the kids. We fart too, but we do so discreetly for a reason. You may not like our potpourri and scented candles, but they're infinitely better than toxic and flammable methane.

Amendment VII
We have the right to keep and bear tons of girly bathroom products.
You have your tools; so do we. These items are expensive and to be used sparingly. It brings no joy to see our $15 bath bar shrunk down to the size of a quarter after two passes on your chest and legs.

Amendment VIII
We have the right to speak to our girlfriends every day.
About whatever we want, whenever we want. Please don't eavesdrop or criticize. We know you're not that interested in gossip or psycho-analytical interpretations of why some people do what they do, so we turn to our like-minded female friends for instant gratification. Yes, we do talk about you—a lot. It helps us work through issues. This keeps us happy, sane and, usually, off your case.

Amendment IX
We have the right to flirt.
Not the kind that makes you jealous, but the healthy practice of connecting with another person on a non-sexual level. Light banter is fun, quick-witted, and encouraging to our self esteem. It might even remind you of why you feel in love with us. And if it gets us a smoking deal on that new furnace or a free stay for the family at a million-dollar ski chalet, so much the better.

Amendment X
We have the right to foreplay.
A fine bottle of wine, soft music, deep looks into each other's eyes, compliments, holding hands, cuddling—these are all forms of foreplay, and we insist on them. Please don't reach for our crotch or breasts and expect us to melt into a porn kitten. It didn't work when we met, it most certainly doesn't work now. Sure, we women are strong and independent, and appreciate an inspired quickie when the moment strikes, but we also have an inner soft spot the size of Texas that needs squeezing and cherishing. We appreciate you more when you think about how it feels to us rather than how it feels to you.

Just a little something I found amusing, I don't necessarily believe all are necessary :) what do you think about it?

Preamble:

We, the husbands of America, do not claim to be perfect. We're far from it. While we love being married to the wives of America, we have a few things that we'd like to straighten out. We're not asking for the world here. We understand that things like following our college football team to every away game is out of the question, as are after-dinner cigars. However; there are a few minor things that we'd like to clear up to make our marriage a happy one.

Amendment I

We have the right to go out with our friends at least once a month.
A man's relationship with his buddies is a bond that should never be broken. It helps keep us feeling young, connected and sane. It also helps us break the routine just like nights with the girls do for you. Even as we reach middle age, we like the fact that we still have a "crew."

Amendment II

We reserve the right to dislike your friend's husbands.
We promise to give the guy a fair shot, but when he starts acting like a moron, we can no longer authorize events with that family. And yes, wives have the same freedom to blackball when the tables are turned. It doesn't mean we like your friend any less, it just means that in her haste to have a big, fancy wedding, she chose a jackass that we don't want to spend our rare time off with. Listening to stories about how "wicked" he was on the French horn in his bitchin' ‘80s band is just too much.

Amendment III

We have the right to have a few things of ours in the house.
Everything we hold near and dear to us shouldn't all be in the garage. While we understand that our framed KISS concert poster might not make it on the living room wall, at least throw us a bone. The scene in "Juno" where Jason Bateman realized that everything he held near and dear was in a 200-square-foot room was a gut-shot to us all.

Amendment IV

We have the right not to be scolded by you.
We are your husbands, not your children. We don't mean to track dirt onto the carpet or get chips on the couch, but it's not like we just got a lap dance. Don't treat us like your children and we'll do our best not to act like them.

Amendment V

We have the right to teach our sons how to burp and fart.
Sharing bodily functions with our offspring is as much about life as it is about jokes. It's also something that can help brings kids and dads together. Believe me, kids and guys always laugh at farts—that's how we're wired. And we're not talking about being totally gross and inappropriate. We vow to teach them that there is a time and a place for behavior like this—and that the early service at Church is not one of them.

Amendment VI

We have the right to teach our children how to defend themselves.
Fighting is barbaric, terrible, and scary. But it's also part of growing up. We want our kids to be able to get out of a bad situation, not be bullied, and be able to take care of themselves. One of the plus sides of learning how to take care of yourself is that the more you know, the less you have to use it. Teaching our offspring how to defend themselves in a scary world is one of the basic duties of a father.

Amendment VII

We have the right to as much reading material in the bathroom as we need.
Sometimes we're in there a while, we can't help it. And no, we're not hiding … most of the time.

Amendment VIII

We have the right to watch the big game.
We care too much about our teams. We know it's not rational, but it's who we are. No one can explain the love men have for their teams, but you may as well embrace it because that love will not die. If you don't believe this, just remember the Boston Red Sox had the most loyal fans in sports and didn't win a World Series for 86 years.

Amendment IX

We have the right to the remote when we're on the couch.
This is something that's in our DNA. We know it, and you know it. If there's any doubt, watch us surf at top speed while knowing if a show is worth watching after stopping on it for .2 seconds. It's a thing of beauty.

Amendment X

We have the right to still use chivalry.
Yes … we know women are strong and independent, and we dig that. But allow us to open the door for you, or give up a seat and act like a gentleman once in a while. The world will be a better place because of it.

Last week I wasn't able to do a monday weigh-in since I didn't get to go to the gym. Actually ever since Elise was born I still haven't been able to get back to the gym. Not that I mind, I prefer going home than spending time there. Hehehe! (valid excuse)

I usually weigh myself at the gym, but since I don't have the chance to do so, I'll just keep track of my weight using the weighing scale I have in our bathroom.

Current weight : 260lbs

It's funny how everyone who finds out that I just became a dad tells me to get as much sleep as possible. It seems that if there is one common experience for all new parents, its that --> we all become sleep deprived individuals.

But it is just as amazing though holding one's baby in one's hand and just observing how she sleeps (which is usually the case with Elise, since she's almost always asleep). Or trying to gain their attention as their eyes tend to focus on other stuff in the room.

As a close friend of mine said, whenever she looks at Elise, nawawala ang stress niya. Same here, holding her in my arms, I feel happy and content with my life. All the fatigue that comes from the day is lost and it just feels great holding her and cradling her. Until of course feeding time when she needs to go back to mommy Franny =)

I knew it was gonna be bad, but not that bad...

For those who have been following my blog every so often, you are all more than aware that it has been my ongoing goal to get my weight down.

Today I went back to the gym after buying myself a new pair of sneakers (the old ones had a hole that you could already see my socks). And after everything I weighed myself, I was shocked at my current weight --> 265lbs.

To put it into perspective, my heaviest was recorded at 238lbs (jan 2005). I was able to work it off to get myself down to 235lbs by the end of October that same year. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to maintain my momentum and ended up gaining some weight during the holidays. The next years I pretty much maintained my weight around 245-250lbs.

I've always managed to maintain it by at least taking some time to go to the gym twice a week at least. But since I started working, I haven't been able to go. Now I'm pretty much back to where it all started.

If there is something that's going for me, is that I've started to eat much healthier stuff. Hopefully with me going back to the gym, I'll be able to get myself back on track. So let me state the goal and let's see as the year goes by how much progress I make.

End of year goal : 245lbs
Ideal weight: 225lbs.

That's pretty much my rant for today. I know I can do it, it's just going to take time. And I shouldn't allow myself to get frustrated if results don't follow right away. Patience as they say is a virtue.

It's been over a month, 2 and a half to be exact, since I last did my monday weigh-in. For the first month after the weigh-in I was very diligent going to the gym, but the next month and a half was a completely different story.

I really dreaded going back since I sort of knew that I had gained a ton of weight lately. Here's the report

Hello!

I've texted some of you already, but for those I do not have the luxury of knowing your cell numbers, I want to inform you all that my yahoo account has been hacked and that whoever it is that is using it, is trying to scam you all into buying them some globe credits.

I just got home an hour or two ago, and for some reason I am having problems logging on to my yahoo messenger. At first, I thought it was one of those instances when YM is just down and its not available.

But then I try to access my email accounts and I get the message, "invalid password". What the?!?! To think just a few hours ago I was able to access my yahoo account while at work, and now its saying that I have an invalid password!

I am really annoyed cause, I've tried resetting my password and nothing seems to work. I've already emailed yahoo customer service hoping that they can do something. I'm not sure if it'll be successful. It's just so frustrating! What a way to end the day...

It was my birthday last weekend and as is usually the case, I really didn't know how I wanted to celebrate it. In the end, Friday was spent having dinner with friends which was a lot of fun since almost everyone was able to join us at Sambuca. It was a nice italian restaurant which served family style so we just ordered a few items and just shared amongst ourselves.

The next day, was spent sleeping in till lunch time, which is a rarity now that I'm working (even if its a weekend I end up waking up around 9am). Franny and I then went to my Ninong's place in Wharton, NJ to meet up with some other relatives of mine who were on vacation.

Then in the evening we just stayed at home and watch some shows on tv and played some wii sports. It was a nice simple birthday celebration which (i ended up figuring out) to be what I really wanted. =)

Franny had her ultrasound earlier today and we were fortunate that our baby was very cooperative since we were able to find out whether we'll be having a girl or boy...

it's gonna be a baby girl!!! woohoo!

getting back into the habit...

Today I went back to the gym and decided to get back into the habit of working out. As is my habit, I check my weight before I head back to my apartment. Getting on the weighing scale confirmed something that I had known, that I had gained weight. It shocked me though to see how much I had gained!

Now I am making a vow to hit the gym at least 3 times a week. I have to get my weight down again. It was just so disappointing, given that I had managed to lose a lot of weight during the early summer months.

current weight : 260.75lbs
weight lost : ---

Immediate goal as before is to get my weight below 250lbs, then I guess long term would be to get it around 230lbs.

Today was a rather pathetic day for me with regards to my teaching.

Let me just go straight to the story, for the love of Adam Smith, I couldn't explain to my students producer surplus properly with the use of a graph. It just felt like my brain decided to just shut down and say, no more lessons for today! I was drawing the graphs cause that's easy enough, but for some reason, none of my calculations were making sense.

My God it was so bad!!!

I just promised that on Monday I'll have everything straightened out. What annoys me more is that I actually figured out the problem after class. At least I don't have to think about it during the weekend.

Parable of the Prodigal Son

For those of us who are catholics, I'm sure the parable I mentioned is one of those that we pretty much can retell off the top of our heads. It is one of those stories which gets retold every year and is always to talk about God's unending love and how all we have to do is ask for His forgiveness and He will accept us back in his fold.

You might be wondering why the sudden talk about this parable, well it was one of the readings read during the Gospel last Sunday and it was also read during a prayer meeting which I attended while my in-laws were in town.

I'll admit that at some point, one tends to drift off when one is listening to it, or to the Homily that follows given that the moral of the story has pretty much been the same always. But this time, I guess for some reason, I thought about the parable and came out with a few thoughts about it as well.

One of the main ideas is the the fact that God is there, willing to forgive us and rejoices in our return to Him. And that the repentant son, has realized the error of his ways, and asks for forgiveness.

But I guess what struck me, was the fact in which the son comes to that realization. It is in the lowest point of his life that he comes to this realization. In some ways, I feel that one of the lessons we have to pick up is that we shouldn't fall into despair. It is indeed easy to wallow in self-pity or to just give up and just surrender to whatever fate we are in. But that is the trap that we must not fall into. We must also remember that God is there waiting for us to come back and guide us with open arms. It just necesitates that we are willing to accept Him into our lives, and not push him away or walk away, just as the son did at the start of the story.

That's really what I thought of during the Mass, that we really must try to stay away from the feeling of despair. It is indeed understandable to go through a period but to allow ourselves to remain in such a state is unacceptable for us, knowing that the Lord indeed is there, and that He has a wonderful plan for us. (on a personal note, I really didn't believe in this as well, but after all that has happened to me the past few years, I really am a firm believer in this!)

friends in town...

Mark and Ton-ton, two of my closest friends from high school came over for a few days to go around NYC. Was a pretty quick trip for both especially for Mark since he arrived on Thursday and left Sunday while Ton, spent just a quick week.

We had dinner at Olives a restaurant owned by Chef Todd English located in the Union Square Area. It was a nice quiet restaurant which allowed us to relax and catch up on how things were with each other. I highly recommend this place.

We then just walked towards Times Square to enjoy the nice weather. There are more pictures during their visit on the photos page of my blog.

Ton-ton went to six flags with his friend during the weekend, while Mark along with the other pinoys here and I went to check out Coney Island, which we heard was going to be shut down (I have no idea if this is confirmed).

It was nice having them in town. Hopefully next time the others from our barkada can join us and spend more time here in NYC. One week really isn't enough to go around and check everything out. You could try to cram it but more than likely you'll end up looking like this...

another school year has begun...

Well school has officially started, this semester, I was assigned to teach 2 basic macroecon classes, but since I'm now working, I was allowed to drop one of the classes and retain my 6-715pm class.

I know some might say I'm crazy for still wanting to teach especially after working the whole day in the city. But I just say that I enjoy teaching. For me, I really don't get tired from teaching. I find it actually energizing and refreshing. Teaching is the fun part, having to hold consultation hours however is what I don't enjoy.

Hopefully this rush I feel when I teach lasts throughout the semester, since before I was always just teaching and not doing anything else. Good luck to my students, may you find clarity and substance from my lectures. Hehehe!!!

I got a call from my mom's phone, and wasn't able to answer it. I checked my voicemail to hear my younger brother's voice cracking and he was crying... His first few words told it all

I can't believe he's gone. I had known that he hasn't been feeling well. But my mom told me after she flew back last month that he was feeling better already.

He was checked in to a hospital yesterday due to some chest pains, then roughly an hour he went through cardiac arrest. I don't remember the details, it doesn't matter.

I hate how when you first hear it, shock is all there is and you don't really feel anything. Then it hits you and it just overwhelms you.

A few things about my lolo...

It was my lolo who actually made me appreciate math. Maybe appreciate isn't the right word, but rather he made me understand how the thing works. I'd go visit them in Sta. Mesa and he'd spend an hour and a half helping me out and giving me tips on how to better understand the whole thing.

He was also the one who taught me how to play chess. It took me sometime to actually remember how to play. I recall asking him to go over how each piece would move. And when I started to really play, he never would say no to a game if I asked. He also gave me my first chess set. It was the chess set he used to play with before.

There are more but I'd rather leave it at that.

First day of work in a few hours from now. I'm a bit nervous and excited cause unlike other first days of work, this one is a full time job!

I know it's late and I should be sleeping, I guess I'm a bit cranky cause it's been a long day and I'm tired.

What the hell is wrong with multiply's cross posting option?!?! It isn't doing what it's supposed to do! 2 months ago, it was so easy, I would just write my entry on blogspot and within a day it'll be up on my multiply account as well.

Most people wonder why keep my blogspot account. It's just so much more convenient, given that you can post entries and you have the option of changing the post date. It's not like you have time to sit down in front of your computer at the end of the day. That's pretty much the only reason I still maintain this account.

One last thing I hate with the cross-post option is that if you do it manually, you have to uncheck all the other entries that you have from your blogspot or other blog. And this you have to do everytime even if the other entries are already posted on your blog. What's worse, it's not like you are just unchecking 10-20 entries, but for those who blog many times, I have to uncheck around 200 boxes! It's just damn tiring to do it. Argh!!!
